AAA
BOISE - AAA has announced a national partnership with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), mirroring a long-standing partnership that has been in place in Idaho for the past several years.

According to the Idaho Transportation Department, there were 1,700 impaired driving crashes in Idaho last year, resulting in 86 deaths.

More can and must be done to ensure that the roads are safe for everyone.  Better technology and better vigilance from concerned friends and family members can significantly reduce the occurrence of impaired driving.

"Please arrange a safe ride home - or a place to stay - for everyone before the party begins," says AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde.  "Whether you're enjoying the big game or celebrating the beginning of the New Year, the right preparation can prevent dangerous decisions behind the wheel."

AAA's tips to avoid impaired driving include:
  • Downloading a ride-hailing app or pre-arranging carpooling with a designated driver
  • Switching to non-alcoholic beverages as the event progresses
  • Asking your doctor how prescription medications may affect your ability to drive safely
  • Speaking up if a friend or loved one cannot drive safely, and never riding with an impaired driver

According to a recent AAA study, 93% of drivers say impaired driving is very or extremely dangerous - yet 7% admitted to doing so in the previous 30 days.

"Please celebrate responsibly," Conde said.  "No one wants a fun evening to end in tragedy."
